The beginning of the long history of Rethymno lays back in the Neolithic period. There is evidence for the existence of the city starting from 6th - 5th century BC, when the city was thriving. Followed by difficult periods with various conquerors: Dorians, Romans, Venetians, Turks and Germans were the most important invaders.
